A famous church in this area, Klooster ter Apel, with abbey (built in the 1500s), had monks associated with it for centuries. It was Catholic, then. Now it is Protestant and is being restored. This weather vane at the top of the bell tower was used as target practice by the Nazis during WWII. It has been replaced with a new weather vane; this one is a part of the museum.
